Permalink Reply by Charles Cole on December 20, 2011 at 1:29pm You are probably right. it is expandable and fits on a smallish foot print. I think?
Now it is just a matter of where do they put it? This upcoming season could go a long way towards determining where they ultimately plan to build. I assume that they at least now know they need to be as near an urban downtown as possible, rather than in a location like the tomato patch like they originally planned.
Nestor wouldn't give us even a singly, tiny clue when we grilled him on it at the press conference. So who knows what they are thinking for sure?
I just hope we get some news soon. There is only one year left on their initial deal at Al Lang, but the longer we go without hearing anything new the more likely it is that we'll be there for the foreseeable future.
Permalink Reply by Paul Peluso on December 20, 2011 at 3:02pm I personally think that unless they are moving to downtown Tampa, they should stay at Al Lang Field. In order to move into a new stadium in Tampa in 2013, they'd have to break ground around the start of the 2012 season. Unless something is announced soon, I doubt that will happen. Honestly though, they've made the switch to St. Pete and have spent time and money building up the club in that area. I'm not sure if they'd want to have to do it all over again in Tampa. This being the second year at Al Lang, hopefully there is better support and if they start selling out some games they could eventually make it soccer-specific and expand from 7K to 10K with newer amenities in the future.
Permalink Reply by Charles Cole on December 20, 2011 at 4:01pm well yeah, they obviously would have to stay in St. Pete until a new stadium is built. So it is highly likely they'll be at Al Lang for at least another season past their current two year agreement. Al Lang is still a perfectly fine temporary location.
And if they decided to stay in St. Pete it'll be very interesting to see where they build.
Permalink Reply by Jared Selph on December 20, 2011 at 6:34pm I'm in the "beggars can't be choosers" camp. The Rowdies need their own stadium and the sooner they build one, the better. I'd be satisfied with something like Carolina has at WakeMed, but I also think they should look to the setup Atlanta has (with natural grass, of course). Those of us who went on the Mob roadtrip in August had a lot of positive things to say about their stadium.
We don't need to build another Red Bull Arena in the Bay area, but if the Rowdies wanted to go (relatively) big, I'd suggest a look at the Weston Homes Community Stadium in Colchester, England. http://www.footballgroundguide.com/colchester_united/ It's relatively new and seats just over 10,000. I've always had a thing for English four-stand grounds and this one looks like it would work perfectly for us.
Permalink Reply by Whitestar Warriors on December 20, 2011 at 8:59pm That stadium looks good and perfect size 10k and can be expendable. I wonder how much it would cost to refurbish Al Lang Field?

Permalink Reply by Chris Dominguez on December 21, 2011 at 2:02pm The original stadium plan, which I've included a link to above, seems to have room for expansion as Charlie pointed out. Once it's eventually expanded, it would look similar to a classic four-stand venue like you find in the UK.
Permalink Reply by Jared Selph on December 22, 2011 at 6:22pm Here's a bit more info and another drawing of the original stadium plan: http://www.genesisgroup.com/projects/271.php I sometimes wonder how differently things might have gone for FC Tampa Bay had they been allowed to build that stadium.
You're right, there's plenty of room to expand and I'm sure it would be smarter and cheaper to build just the two stands and then build more if there's a demand. My reason for suggesting the other stadium design was purely for aesthetics, since the original plans just look incomplete with only two stands. That and I think 10,000 seats would be the maximum we could use as a second-division team. Perhaps I'm being a bit negative or not thinking big enough, but even with all the right things falling into place (the Rowdies name, effective marketing, an urban or near-urban location, etc.), I just don't see a second-division soccer team needing more than 10,000 seats on all but a few special occasions, such as a friendly with a big-name team.
I'd like to pose this question to everyone: Say the Rowdies came to you and asked you to design a stadium for them. Where would you put it (no Tampa vs. St. Pete pissing matches, please), how many seats would it have and what other amenities would it have for the fans? I'd love to know what you all would build.

1. AL Lang Field/downtown
2. Channelside the best but I think Rays are going there in near future.
8-10k stadium with expendable to 15-17k, a mini brewery, soccer store, restaurant,
a standing section behind goal for Ralph's Mob.

1. Downtown St. Pete, maybe in Al Lang's location or in the vicinity.
2. 7-10k no more. We don't want a vastly empty stadium when there are games on those rainy weekday nights. fully enclosed (4 sides) ALL SEATER. None of that burm behind the goal. We may like to stand the whole time, but sometimes, ya gotta sit, and I don't want to be at field level behind a goal.
3. There needs to be some sort of awning over the stands like we have now. Not only does it protect from rain and sun, but it acts as a megaphone and creates an echo for our chants! Also, who doesn't want a JUMBO TRON! We need to see replays!
4. Obviously food/drink stands, merch store (not booth) and beer beer beer beer beer.
5. There should be offices at the stadium. This is where the FO can be located.
Am I missing anything?
