Rowdies will play 5 years at ALF:
In November, the city extended SPBC’s term to operate Al Lang for another five years. That fits in with the Rowdies’ plans.
“For us, that’s a timeframe we’re looking at for Al Lang,” Nestor said.

Though it's not stated if the Rowdies actually signed an extension on their lease, just that the SPBC did. Which sucks, since baseball doesn't attract people there anymore.

With a 5 year plan already in place for ALF, where is the news of another site for the possible SSS? Are the Rowdies even thinking about it? Or do they plan on staying at ALF forever? Or even buying ALF from St. Petersburg outright? (Personally, I think that is the best option for the Rowdies unless something in Tampa pops up.) Inquiring minds want to know.
Permalink Reply by Charles Cole on May 3, 2012 at 5:43pm That article says nothing about how long the Rowdies may or may not be at ALF. It just mentions the fact that, unfortunately, St. Pete Baseball controls the property for the next five years.
Which means if the Rowdies do stay, they will continue to make ZERO money on concessions, ZERO money on parking and I wouldn't be surprised if they have to pay St. Pete Baseball a fee for merch sales like they had to with the Yankees at GSF.
Unless attendance improves dramatically, I am absolutely against staying there much longer. I would still agree that the team has not done nearly enough to market their product and that no doubt is having a negative impact.
But I'd counter by saying that they could put forth the same amount of crap effort while playing in Tampa and very likely average a decent % more.
500 to 1000 more fans per game is a BIG deal for a minor league soccer team. And IMO that would be the minimum of what we should expect.
And if the Rowdies did control their own stadium, which I concede they'd have to if they do want to play in Tampa, they'd then control all profits from concessions, parking and any other residual. Plus the extra revenue from the increased ticket sales.
500 to 1000 more fans per game based on an average ticket price of $10 (VERY lowball figure, but makes up for giveaways and other comps) = anywhere between $5,000 and $10,000 per game.
That's anywhere between $70,000 and $140,000 per season on increased ticket revenue alone for regular season games. Throw in extra games such as Open Cup or friendlies or playoffs and the number goes up (while operating costs also go up, of course). And again that is probably a very low estimate when averaged Rowdies ticket prices are probably a little higher. This is just for arguments sake.
It's also likely a low estimate of the increase in attendance we could see by playing in Tampa.
For a minor league soccer team that is constantly in a fight for survival, I do not get any decision to stay in St. Pete without either a VERY significant increase in marketing efforts or ALOT more support from the city itself.
